Description: http://cdn3-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2013/09/file_109012_1_frozen-poster-small.jpg

The movie that I have chosen to analyse is Frozen. During the period that this films was released two methods used by Walt Disney to help promote this movie were firstly, the distribution of film posters to services all around the country such as bus stops, trains, busses, billboards etc. and the public advertisement of the film trailer on social medias (Facebook, YouTube, twitter etc.)
The film that I have chosen is a widely distributed, animated children’s called Frozen that now currently remains the highest grossing animation of all time.
The companies used for the production of this movie are Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney pictures whilst the companies used to distribute this film are: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. On the film poster for Frozen and at the beginning of the trailer, there is a piece of text saying ‘from the creators of tangled and wreck it ralph’. This is a very efficient way to promote the movie as the movie Tangled had a gross of $200,807,262 with a rating 7.8/10 on imdb whilst Wreck it Ralph also had a rating of 7.8/10 with a gross of $189,412,677. Adding the names of these successful movies on a film poster is an efficient way of promoting a movie as these movies were both high grossing and high ranking movies connoting to the audience that this movie will be just as good if not better than the other movies due to the reputation the viewer will now have on Disney. Another unique selling point on the film poster and trailer is the Disney logo used. The Disney logo is right placed above the frozen logo. This emphasises the institutional details of the companies as well as attract more viewers as Disney have a reputation of over 100 years of great quality family movies.

In the trailer for the movie frozen it starts off with an equilibrium with the setting normal and everything fine but then a disequilibrium is created where the antagonist (Elsa) starts to freeze everything and she runs away from the castle whilst her sister the protagonist (Anna) goes on an adventure to find her. This creates an enigma in the audiences head as they want to know what happens afterwards which will result in the audience developing voyeuristic pleasure once they finally see the movie. One of the most pre-eminent key scenes of the trailer is the medium close up shot that is displayed at 0:24. The reason for this being a key scene of the trailer is because the audience get to see a close view of Anna’s face after she is attacked; the audience get to see the susceptibility, discontent and tremor displayed on Anna’s face giving them vicarious pleasure as they will be able to emotionally engage with the protagonist. Another key moment of the trailer is at 2:00 where there is a medium close up shot of Elsa. This is also a key moment because her facial expression connotes to the audience sorrow and repentance. This will also give the audience vicarious pleasure as they’ll show sympathy and pity for Elsa.

Camera Work: Shot by Shot Analysis

This photo is a is a medium close up shot of Tom Cuise being cornered by the police. This creates tension for the viewers as there are 6 police officers placed in front of Tom Cruise, making him seem helpless and therefore making the viewer feel more sympathy and pity for the character.

This photo is an establishing shot that has been used to predict/show where the next scene in this movie is going to take place. This is telling the audience that the next scene is going to take place in the alleyway. The fact that Tom Cruise is running in this picture shows that he is trying to make an escape and  this can cause a dramatic build up of tension in the viewers mind as they're unsure of what could happen next.

In this photo you can see that the directors have used an extreme close up shot. This shot may have been used to help the viewer emotionally engage with Tom Cruise. The fear and intimation on Tom Cruise's face is clearly visible in this photo due to the fact that they've used an extreme close up.

Summer Project Analysis

Analysis on the movie 'Lucy'

Brief summary of the Plot:
Lucy's boyfriend  tricks her into delivering a briefcase to a supposed business contact. She is then abducted by thugs who try to use her to her body to transport her drugs abroad. A packet containing the chemical CPh4 is surgically placed inside of her stomach, but the packet leaks and is transported into her system unintentionally, giving her superhuman abilities, including telekinesis and telepathy. Lucy is then in desperate need for help and calls a scientist for help. However her powers spiral out of control leaving the ending outcome anonymous.

The Genre/sub-genres:
The genre of the movie 'Lucy' is seen as a science fiction action thriller. There are many key elements to a scifi movie that lie present in the movie 'Lucy'. One of these key elements are 'futuristic materials'. This is possibly the biggest factor that contributes to this movie being classed as a scifi. The reason that this is, is because in this movie the main character (Lucy) is kidnapped by some Chinese Mafia members that (without her consent or permission) drug her with a chemical known as CPh4. In this movie CPh4 is believed to increase the usage of the humans brain power with the ability to help the brain reach its maximum capacity of 100% (when in reality we only use 10%). This is an element of scifi because this kind of technology isn't present or reachable at our current/present time. Another contributing factor to 'Lucy' being a science fiction based film are the powers that she is able to possess within the movie. In the movie 'Lucy', after the main character is drugged with the chemical CPh4, she slowly starts to develop more and more impracticable features. The powers that she possesses are: the ability to retrieve information telepathically from any type of informative based technology (e.g phones, laptops, computers), the ability to control the mind of anyone/anything, the ability to connect with other beings bodies and see if they're healthy or not and why ; she also possesses the power to slow down time. They key elements to an action thriller that this movie possesses are: the usage of fire arms, fighting scenes, explosions, kidnapping and the usage of bombs. These are key elements to an action thriller that are clearly present in the movie 'Lucy'.

Characters (How they are linked to scifi)
Lucy: Lucy is the main character of the movie. She is linked to science fiction because of the mystical and inexplicable powers that she possesses. These powers are: telepathy, mind control, ability to slow down time, time travel, ability to retrieve information from technological devices and ability to see the well being of a body from a single touch.
Professor Samuel Norman: Professor Samuel Norman is the second most important person in the movie. The reason that Professor Samuel Norman is linked to the scifi genre is because of his insane knowledge and understanding of the human brain. His study and knowledge is what draws the attention of the main character 'Lucy' as she comes trying to seek help. In many scifi movies there tends to always be a intellectual science professor as it can be seen as one of the key elements of a dystopian futuristic scifi movie. Many examples of this are: Spider man, Iron Man, ect.

The setting of the movie and what makes it a sci-fi:
The movie 'Lucy' has a quite urban setting as it is set and based in the busy streets of Taipei (city in Taiwan). Although Lucy may have an urban setting, one of the key aspects of the movie that make it a scifi is it's historic atmosphere that is present at the very end of the movie which is shown to the viewer as 'Lucy' time travels to the past world using one of her special powers.

Themes:
The narrative themes in this movie are: Futuristic technology, mystical powers, utopian world and criminal activity.

The Institution Behind the film:

The Production company:
The companies that helped with the production of this movie were Canal+, Cine+, TF1 group and Europa Corp. Luc Besson was the director of this movie.Luc Besson is a French film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is known for directing and producing thrillers and action films that are visually rich.

The Cast:
Scarlet Johansson (Lucy)
Morgan Freeman (Professor Samuel Norman)
Choi Min-SIK (Mr Jang)
Amr Waked (Pierre Del Rio)
Analeigh Tipton (Caroline)
Johan Phillip Asbaek (Ric Hard)
Mason Lee
Loik Brabant (1st Professor)

Date of Release:
August 22nd 2014

Budget and Box office Information:
The budget for this movie was 40 million US dollars and the amount that Lucy made internationally was 100 million dollars.

Critical Reception:
The movie Lucy gained a magnificent 6.4/10 on IMBD, 66% on Rotten Tomatoes and 61% on Metacritic. The criticism on this movie found online is that 'its too unrealistic and has no logic'. This has not won any awards yet.

Target Audience:
The movie 'Lucy' was aimed for both genders male and female. I believe that this is because although this movie may have a lot of action and intemperate scenes, the main character of this movie is a female and carries quite a dominant look all throughout the movie. This could in turn draw the attention of females as well as males. This movie is also aimed at people from ages 12 and upwards as anyone younger wouldn't be able to view such graphic content.

I Robot

Language:
The title on this movie poster is written in a block like font. This connotes that the movie is going to have a scientific aura or a dystopian atmosphere/theme.The writing below the title saying "One man saw it coming" can also have a foreshadow effect on the viewer giving them the perception that the 'man' that is being spoken of in the sub heading is a hero and a paladin just by the atmosphere that is given off in the poster. The writing a little further below the sub heading it has all the names of the directors, companies and movie executives used for the creation of this movie which is hugely important as it is one of the main contributing factor on the sales, popularity and distinction of this movie.

Institution:
The movie I robot was produced by the companies 20th Century Fox, Davis Entertainment and overbook entertainment. Davis entertainment is a company specialise in the production scientific dystopian movies. They are very well known for the production of the movies: Predator, Alien vs Predator and I robot. All of which are very well known multimillion dollar, award winning and prominent/classic movies. It was a commercially successful movie making over $140 million dollars with a budget of 120 million dollars as well as being nominated for the Best Science Fiction film in the 2005 Saturn Awards and winning the Ascap Film and Television Music Awards in 2005.

Audience:
This movie looks like it would be targeted mainly towards males rather than females. I believe that this is because the main genres of this movie are science fiction and action. However, the second main character in this movie (Susan Calvin) who is very closely linked to the fist main character (Detective Del Spooner) is a middle aged interlectual female who appears in many of the most important scenes of this movie yet she is only on camera for about 1/4 of the movie. This could have a very mild effect on the target audience making it have a slight appeal to females. However this is only on a narrow scale as the scenes within this movie are quite violent and action packed which could be a major turn away for young females. In addition to males being the main target audience, I also think that this movie is targeted towards young teenagers ranging from the ages of twelve to up to the age of 25. I believe that this is because young males tend to be more attracted to science fiction, violent and action packed movies. Another contributing factor that helps further prove this theory is that Will Smith is the main character of this movie. He is a very commercial well known face, helping to draw the attention of younger males of today's age.

Representation:
In this movie poster, Will Smith (Detective Del Spooner) is the main focal point of the photo. He is placed in the centre of the photo in the dominant stance, yet a heroic manner is portrayed. The androids placed behind him gives the viewer the foreshadow effect that Detective Del Spooner is to put an end to these robots and stop a dystopian planet from being spouted. You can also tell  that with this film poster, the viewer can easily tell that this is a science fiction movie. This is due to the way they've portrayed the atmosphere. The colours within the photo range from white to blue to black. These are quite futuristic colours that give the viewer a scientific view and approach on the movie. The mystic blue and airy sky makes the viewer perceive this movie with a dystopian based environment and hectic atmosphere.
